Nine Charleston Firefighters Perish in Blaze

sunset/SCLODD2.jpgCHARLESTON, S.C. --

Fire swept through a furniture warehouse, collapsing the building's roof and claiming the lives of nine firefighters in a disaster the mayor described Tuesday as "difficult to fathom or quantify."

"Nine brave, heroic, courageous firefighters of the city of Charleston have perished fighting fire in a most courageous and fearless manner, carrying out their duties," Charleston Mayor Joseph P. Riley said at a morning news conference. "To all of their loved ones, our heart goes out to them."

A two-vehicle accident on Beal Parkway at 8:45 a.m. in the vicinity of International Community Church closed the road and left debris scattered across all four lanes this morning. The occupants of the car - both young men - were trapped and had to be extricated by the "Downtown" crew on B-Shift. A-Shift OCW fire

FIRE/DSC04295.JPG

Just prior to midnight E-1, E-2, R-1, E-6 recieved an alarm for a dwelling fire, Upon arrival, E-1, R-1 found light smoke from the front of the building. Upon taking a quick look, E-1 noted heavy smoke several feet inside the house, pulled an attack line, thereby putting a quick stop to a small kitchen fire. E-6 was tasked with Med care of one of the occupants due to a cut on the finger & smoke inhalation, from venting the front window in hopes of saving the pets inside. OCW was able to save some of the pets from smoke inhalation and the victim was taken to FWBMC by OCEMS. Check out the other pics on the fire page

A message from the President, Shannon R. Stone
Shannon's term as president ends this June.

Thanks to all the members for the continued support I received during my two terms as president of Local 2601. I feel we have made great progress during that time and it could not have been accomplished without the support of each member and the E-Board. It has been an honor to serve the men and women of IAFF Local 2601.

ELECTIONS for a new President will be held in JUNE 2008. Anyone interested should contact an E-Board member ASAP.

ON THE JOB!

"Sticker club"

Please remove all IAFF markings from your vehicle when selling, trading-in, etc. The IAFF logo is universally known and respected and identifies both them and their family members as part of an elite profession and connected to Organized Labor.

IAFF decals and emblems should not be given or sold to any individuals or non-family members who are not IAFF members. What you perceive to be a friendly gesture may be viewed by a police officer as illegal. Police in some states have interpreted the displaying of an IAFF or fire department logo by individuals who are not firefighters or the immediate family member of a firefighter as impersonating a firefighter, which is illegal in most states.

DO THE RIGHT THING.  REMOVE IAFF DECALS WHEN DISPOSING OF A MOTOR VEHICLE IN ANY WAY.
